GeoMôn and Green Space Dark Skies Event
August 2022 : GeoMôn volunteers participated in a unique event centred around Mynydd Parys and Porth Amlwch, key locations in the Isle of Anglesey AONB. The GeoMôn Green Space Dark Skies event, led by the outdoor artwork production company Walk the Plank, invited people from all paths of life to experience beautiful landscapes across the UK during the summer of 2022, as part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK.

Around 400 people (“Lumenators”) congregated at Base Camp at Mynydd Parys to receive the specially designed low intensity, handheld lights. These lights enabled moving pictures to be made on the landscape that was filmed from above by drone. GeoMôn had a display stand here, manned by our volunteers, and Prof. Cynthia Burek and Gavin Rowlands, two of our trustees, gave short talks on the geology, landscape and history of the mine, as background to the walk through the area at dusk to over 23 people.
The concept was to shine a light, gently, onto the geology and history of the area around Mynydd Parys and Amlwch and highlight the relationship between the mine, the port, Neolithic copper mining, the industrial extraction of the nineteenth century, and the use of copper in the production of the semi-conductors and microchips that have powered the technological age.

The following evening, the GeoMôn Green Space Dark Skies event activities centred around Porth Amlwch, and the GeoMôn Watch House was centre stage. Several hundred people were gathered along the harbour side, with live music and entertainment provided by several noted local artists. Our exhibition centre was open throughout the evening and we were delighted to welcome large numbers of visitors through our ‘climate change through time’ exhibition.
At sunset, the traditional sailing vessel “Vilma” and the historic Cemaes lifeboat, “Charles Henry Ashley” left the harbour for the open sea, carrying lights on board and providing a truly unique and spectacular close to the evening.

A special thanks to all our volunteers who gave up their time to support the event and promote the activities of GeoMôn.
